Global Advances in Thyroid RFA: Insights from Rio

Insights from Rio

In December Francis went to a Thyroid Radiofrequency Ablation conference in Rio, Brazil.

Rio is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It has lots of white sandy beaches with a backdrop of steep mountains. Christ the Redeemer statue is magnificent looking out over the city and Sugarloaf Mountain. At the course it was interesting to see how the indications for Radiofrequency Ablation of thyroid nodules are continuing to expand.

Some experts are taking the procedure to new levels, treating large thyroid nodules and multinodular goitres. Some of the experts are describing Radiofrequency Ablation as the standard of care for benign thyroid nodules. Radiofrequency Ablation for microcarcinomas is now commonplace and is recommended in the American Thyroid Association 2025 guidelines for the treatment of differentiated thyroid carcinoma.
